Dopamine decor – but make it harmonious

Designers around the world have fallen for colour this year – and so have we. Dopamine decor is the name of the colourful trend that takes on bad moods. Every vibrant new piece brings a little happiness into the home. And if you think colourful can't be harmonious, think again. Influencer Sylwia Philipzig (@hej_sylwi) shows us how to make this colourful trend work beautifully. Here's how.

How to – dopamine decor:

  1. Mix colours
  2. Create a neutral base
  3. Use patterns sparingly
  4. Play with textures
  5. Keep things tidy

1. Mix colours

Be bold when mixing – bright colours included. You can create a special kind of harmony by combining strong, clear colours with muted pastel tones: red with pink, green with mint, royal blue with light blue. This way, you emphasise the stronger element.

2. Create a neutral base

Walls and floors are the base for your colourful interior, so try to keep them as neutral as possible. If you can, avoid pure white – it can quickly make bright furniture and accessories look artificial. Earthy tones and soft, muted colours, on the other hand, have a calming effect. One or two matching accessories in your wall colour create a harmonious link between walls and furnishings.

3. Use patterns sparingly

Monochrome is in. Use patterns subtly so the room doesn't look overloaded. A visual statement here and there can work well – but go for clean lines and checks rather than playful patterns.

4. Play with textures

Choose patterns from nature: the grain of marble or wood, different material surfaces and fabric textures give bold colours a natural feel.

5. Keep things tidy

Keep things in order: clear surfaces, tidy shelves and minimal decoration create visual calm – even with plenty of colour. If your belongings don't fit into closed cupboards, storage solutions such as baskets, boxes and crates help you stay organised. The best part: they come in all kinds of colours too.
