1. A range of styles and places to use wall-mounted coat racks

The hallway is the first place that comes to mind for a wall-mounted coat rack. It gives you a convenient place to hang coats, jackets, scarves and bags, so they are easy to reach when you leave the house. The most popular hallway designs have simple hooks (2) or a rail for clothes hangers (1). Wall-mounted coat racks with a shelf (3) also provide space for hats, gloves, keys and your purse, combining a shelf and coat rack in one space-saving piece. Modular designs, such as those with a peg system (4), let you customise your entrance area to suit your needs.

"In a narrow hallway, a wall-mounted coat rack is a great way to hang plenty of clothes without taking up floor space – and to make a design statement at the same time." – Viktoria, interior expert

In the kitchen or bathroom, slim, understated wall-mounted racks are useful for towels. They can be fixed to a door or wall. If you would rather create a focal point, choose a more colourful, striking design (2).

A wall-mounted coat rack can also be a useful alternative to a traditional clothes rail in the bedroom. Designs used with clothes hangers (1) are ideal for displaying favourite dresses, shirts and blouses, or for preparing an outfit for the next day.

2. Wall-mounted coat racks for clothes hangers: how much space do you need?

Wall-mounted coat racks generally come in two styles: with hooks for hanging clothes by their loops, or with a rail for clothes hangers.

If you choose a coat rack with a rail, remember to allow enough room. The rack and hangers extend 30–46 cm into the room, taking up valuable space in a narrow hallway. If space is limited, a classic wall-mounted coat rack with hooks may be a better choice.

Wall-mounted coat racks with several hooks take up little room. As well as hanging clothes by their loops, you can use them with clothes hangers. If you want to hang several hangers side by side, allow 36–46 cm of width for each one.

3. Installation: the right height for a wall-mounted coat rack

When installing a wall-mounted coat rack, first decide how high to mount it. You can use your own height as a guide. Mounting the rack at around 170 cm, for example, should keep even long coats from touching the floor.

If you have children, lower hooks are essential. Tall, vertical coat racks with adjustable hooks, such as the Scoreboard coat rack by We Do Wood, work particularly well. You can place each hook at the right height, giving everyone in the family a place for their jacket.

4. Decorative and unconventional ways to use wall-mounted coat racks

A wall-mounted coat rack does not have to be used only for coats, towels and clothes. Hook rails offer plenty of scope for personalising a room and can also serve as decorative features.

"Hook rails are becoming a key feature. They make a useful addition to any room, giving you a stylish way to hang not only clothes and kitchen utensils, but also picture frames, jewellery, mirrors and much more…" – Viktoria, interior expert

5. Summary: what to consider when buying a designer wall-mounted coat rack

  • A wall-mounted coat rack does not have to go in the hallway. You can also use it for towels in the bathroom or kitchen, or as an alternative clothes rail in the bedroom.
  • With a coat rack that has a rail, allow for the depth of the hangers, which extend 30–46 cm into the room.
  • Use your height as a guide when choosing how high to mount a wall rack. If children will use it, adjust the height accordingly.
  • Hook rails can also be decorative features when styled with mirrors, jewellery or picture frames.
