Dining Chairs

How many chairs fit around a dining table?

Dining table and chairs – how many fit together? The answer depends on the size and shape of the table, the width of the dining chairs and the space in the room. A few standard measurements will help you plan.

Dining table and dining chairs – it's all about proportion

As a guideline, allow about 60 cm of table edge per person. Round and oval dining tables are especially flexible, as there are no corners to limit the seating. A pedestal table also gives you more legroom, because there are no table legs in the way.

A few standard measurements for guidance:

・Round dining table, Ø 120 cm: 4–6 chairs
・Square dining table, 150 × 150 cm: 6–8 chairs
・Rectangular dining table, 180 cm: 6–10 chairs

Which dining chair is right?

With or without armrests? Slim and delicate or generous and comfortable? The width of the dining chair helps determine how many seats you can fit.

At around 60 cm wide, armchairs need more space but offer extra comfort – ideal for long evenings at the table. Slim dining chairs around 40–45 cm wide make the most of the available space. Models 45–50 cm wide are a good compromise: at a table 180 cm long, three chairs usually fit comfortably along each long side.

How much space does the dining area need?

Every centimetre counts around the dining table, too. Allow at least 60 cm between the table and the wall so the chairs can be pushed back comfortably.

Have more space? Then you can place extra chairs at the ends of a rectangular dining table. If two people are to sit side by side there, the table should be at least 100 cm wide.

Four, six or eight chairs: what matters is not just what fits around the table, but how much space you need to sit together comfortably.
