Cereal Bowls

Cereal bowls in a range of sizes and designs for a better start to the day

Breakfast gets your metabolism going and gives you energy for the day ahead. But mornings can be hectic: getting ready, looking after the children, making packed lunches or gathering the last papers for a meeting. There is often little time for a full breakfast, so it gets skipped or replaced with a croissant on the way to work. Muesli is a quick, tasty alternative. From oats with nuts and fresh fruit to chocolate muesli or warm porridge with cinnamon, there is something for every taste. And one thing you will need is a cereal bowl that looks good on the table and brightens your morning. We take a look at different designs and what to consider before you buy.

1. Materials
2. Sizes
3. Shapes and colours
4. Versatility
5. Brands and prices

1. Materials: cereal bowls in porcelain, melamine & more

Porcelain: Porcelain is a popular material for cereal bowls. Whether you choose classic white or a colourful design, porcelain has several advantages. It is resistant to acids and alkalis, easy to clean and quick to dry. It does not absorb bacteria, odours or flavours. Porcelain is also waterproof and insulating, helping food such as porridge or semolina pudding stay warm for longer. Porcelain bowls are both decorative and practical. The main drawback is that the hard material can break if the bowl falls onto the floor, table or worktop.

Melamine: Melamine cereal bowls are a practical choice for families with children. The material is highly resistant to breakage and scratches, and is described as sustainable and long-lasting. Melamine tableware is quieter to use than porcelain or glass. It looks similar to porcelain and feels pleasant to the touch. It is also dishwasher-safe. However, melamine bowls must not be heated, as this may cause substances to be released into food. Food below 70 °C is considered safe. This durable tableware is also useful for picnics. Add melamine plates, bowls, cups and a vacuum flask, and you are ready to go.

Glass: Glass cereal bowls look elegant and show off your muesli to good effect. Like porcelain, glass is odourless and tasteless. It can generally withstand temperatures of up to 500 °C, so you can heat food in it. However, avoid exposing the bowl to sudden changes in temperature, as this could cause it to crack. Glass is relatively heavy and, like porcelain, can break easily.

Stoneware: Stoneware cereal bowls have a decorative, robust look. Stoneware is fired with a reactive glaze, and the edges are rounded. The glaze appears uniform and silky matt around the rim, while its pattern varies with the shape of each piece. This gives every item an individual character.

2. Sizes: choose a bowl to suit your appetite

Cereal bowls are usually around 15 cm in diameter, including the Omaggio bowl by Kähler Design. It holds a generous portion of muesli. Smaller bowls, such as the 9.5 cm Oiva bowl by Marimekko, are suited to a lighter appetite or to serving different kinds of bircher muesli at a Sunday breakfast. Extra-small bowls are available in ranges designed for children, helping little ones learn to eat independently. Sets with bowls in different sizes but the same design are particularly practical. You could also choose a dinnerware set that includes plates and cups as well as several bowls, so everything coordinates.

3. Shapes and colours: cereal bowls for every taste

Classic white or cream cereal bowls sit comfortably in any interior. And white need not mean plain. Delicate details, such as the grooves on the Legio Nova bowl by Eva Solo, can make even a simple bowl a highlight alongside your coffee cup and breakfast board. A hand-painted design adds a decorative touch and brings colour to the table, even early in the morning. Stoneware or brass bowls, such as the Form Bowl Deep by Tom Dixon, have a natural character and add individuality to your home. Romantic floral patterns and warm pastel shades suit a cosy country-style interior. Clean lines and angular shapes in white and grey work well in a modern space. Round cereal bowls in delicate white porcelain are timeless and easy to style.

4. Versatility: more than a cereal bowl

As well as muesli, decorative bowls can be used to serve many other foods, including yoghurt, fruit salad, nuts, chocolate and quark-based desserts. Larger cereal bowls can double as fruit bowls, while smaller ones work well for desserts.

5. Brands and prices: explore the range

Cereal bowls vary in design, brand and price. The range includes options from established brands such as Rosenthal, Eva Trio, Rosendahl and Marimekko, as well as bowls by Kähler Design, Thomas and Stelton in the mid-price range. The brass Form Bowl Deep by Tom Dixon sits at the higher end of the range, as do some dinnerware sets.
