Coasters

Designer coasters for your table – how to find the right ones

Whether as protection against liquids, heat and scratches or as stylish decoration, coasters for glasses and cups belong in every home. Planning a lovely evening with friends or family and inviting them to dinner? Then stylish coasters are part of a complete table setting. In unusual designs and high-quality materials, they not only protect your table from stains but also contribute to the cohesive look of a lovingly laid table. In everyday life, too, designer coasters are practical helpers with many uses. Here's what to consider before you buy.

  1. Suitable materials
  2. The right size
  3. Different shapes
  4. Summary

Suitable materials

Coasters protect the surface underneath. Open-pored wood and stone surfaces quickly absorb liquids, and the stains are often impossible to remove. On shiny surfaces such as stainless steel or glass, coasters save you constant cleaning. They also protect fine tablecloths and table runners from any spills.

Look for designer coasters that you can move easily on any surface without leaving scratches. When choosing the right coaster, also make sure it sits securely – it should be non-slip and level.

Silicone (1)

Silicone is non-slip, durable and water-repellent – the perfect qualities for a practical coaster. This flexible material is particularly popular because it's quick and easy to clean and can even go in the dishwasher.

Metal/stainless steel (2)

Made of stainless steel, metal coasters look elegant and are particularly heat-resistant, making them ideal for serving a hot cup of tea or coffee. With their clean, simple design, they fit beautifully into any interior. The material is easy to care for: simply clean it with washing-up liquid and water or, depending on the model, in the dishwasher.

Wood (3)

Wooden coasters stand out for their natural, individual look. On the dining table, they make a charming eye-catcher and reliably protect the table from dirt and scratches. Remove dust and dirt with a dry cloth. A special oil brings out the shine of the treated surface – so you'll enjoy your coasters for many years.

Leather (4)

This fine material doesn't just look good: it's also particularly heat-resistant and flexible. You can simply wipe stains off the coaster with a damp cloth.

Felt (5)

Felt coasters are made from a hard-wearing, soft natural material that reliably protects even the most delicate furniture surfaces from scratches. Thanks to the natural lanolin in the wool, felt is water- and dirt-repellent, making it a good choice for coasters. However, it's best not to put fatty drinks such as milk on them, as felt is best cleaned dry.

Cork

This soft, natural material feels lovely to the touch. Cork coasters are particularly non-slip. Cork is very light and water-repellent, so it's practical for use around the home.

The right size

Models with a diameter of around 10 centimetres are ideal as coasters for glasses, bottles and glass carafes. You can also place smaller decorative objects such as single candlesticks on them.

Larger pieces with a diameter of around 20 centimetres are more versatile. They can be used as trivets or as mats for plates, vases and carafes. So before you buy, think about what you want to use your coaster for. Designer coasters range in thickness from 0.3 to 2 centimetres. Thin versions, such as our leather coasters, are particularly light and flexible. Thicker ones provide the best protection against heat and moisture.

Different shapes

Coasters let you add accents to your table. They complement placemats and come in a variety of shapes. Round, organic, square or geometric – choose coasters that create a cohesive look on your table. Some shapes can be fitted together to form a larger surface for several bottles and snacks.

"Choose a coaster that feels good in your hand and either combines well with other coasters as part of a series or, thanks to its shape, lets you build a larger arrangement. That way, you'll always create a cohesive look – on a side table and at a large dining table alike." – Viktoria, interior expert
