Muuto Fiber Chair: new life for plastic waste

Giving plastic waste a new life: as part of its sustainability initiatives, Muuto aims to use more recycled materials. This saves natural resources and reduces the amount of waste going to landfill or incineration.

Fiber Chairs with 80% recycled plastic

A classic, reinvented: the unupholstered Fiber Armchairs and Side Chairs are made with at least 80% recycled plastic, significantly reducing the production of new plastic. By switching to recycled plastic, Muuto expects to save more than 50 tonnes of new plastic by the end of 2022.

Why not use 100% recycled plastic? The answer is simple: recycled plastic is often less strong. This is due to the regranulation process – when plastic is recycled, it's cut into smaller pieces so new parts can be moulded from it, and the cutting weakens the material. To make sure the design lasts, new plastic with strength-enhancing additives is combined with the recycled material, ensuring high durability.

Durable design, timeless aesthetics

Developing a durable design isn't just about strength and resilience – it's also about aesthetics that last. The amount of colour pigment needed depends on the original colour of the recycled plastic, which is often grey. To add colour to the material, new plastic is used as a pigment carrier. The more pigment needed, the more new plastic is required.

The distinctive colours and shape of the Fiber Chair are a true hallmark of its design. Muuto has developed a recycled plastic material that allows it to make a chair with the same iconic Muuto colours, the same design and the same durability – all with a significant share of recycled material in every seat. A classic in contemporary form.
