Konstantin Grcic

Design made in Munich

Konstantin Grcic was born in Munich in Germany in 1965. After training as a cabinetmaker at Parnham College in England, he studied design at the Royal College of Art in London from 1988 to 1990. Shortly afterwards, he was already working in Jasper Morrison's design studio.

In 1991, Konstantin Grcic founded his own office in a courtyard building in the centre of Munich, which serves as both studio and workshop. Since then, under the name "Konstantin Grcic Industrial Design", he has designed furniture, objects and lights there for renowned manufacturers such as Depot4Design, Driade, Flos, Iittala and Magis.

His design style

Grcic's products are defined by simple designs that are reduced to the essentials and sometimes seem a little headstrong. In contrast to minimalism as a passing fashion, Konstantin Grcic stands out for a functionality defined by human needs, which he combines with sharp wit, humour
and a demand for maximum formal rigour.

Award-winning design

Many of his products have won prestigious awards.
In 2000, Konstantin Grcic was named "Guest of Honour" at the Interieur Biennale in Kortrijk in Belgium. In 2001, the multipurpose lamp "Mayday", designed by Grcic for Flos, won the Compasso d'Oro and was also added to the permanent collection of the Museum of Modern Art in New York in the USA.

In 2007, Konstantin Grcic was named A&W Designer of the Year, which confirmed his place among the most respected designers. In 2008, the art magazine "art" named Grcic the "greatest living designer", and in 2014 the Vitra Design Museum dedicated a solo exhibition to him.
