In search of the perfect form

A Hamburg native who loves design
Jan Philippi, a foreign trade merchant from Hamburg, had long had a preference for clean shapes. At first, however, he had to deal with selling hi-fi equipment at a Hamburg trading house. He quickly found that some of these products really annoyed him: they were simply too ugly. A man of action, he tried to improve and beautify them – because even hi-fi furniture, he believed, could look good...
In the late 1980s, demand for consumer goods rose in Germany, and Jan Philippi travelled to many countries on behalf of his company, building contacts with competent firms. At the time, however, quantity was in demand rather than quality – a trend that Philippi, as a lover of quality products, didn't want to follow. Disappointed by the taste of the time, he found a bold solution: going it alone.
Two shops and one ideal
In 1992, Jan Philippi opened two shops in Hamburg and stocked them with goods that came close to his ideal of simple, clean-lined, modern design items. With fresh ideas, inspiration from many travels and an unerring sense of good design, he tracked down companies that could turn his design visions into reality. Encouraged by this progress, he soon took the step from retail to wholesale.
